Typically, labels for food products are printed one-sided only. However, harnessing the ability to print labels on both side of the strips allows costs in packaging, production times and transportation to be effectively halved. Reflex Labels says it is the first company in the industry to achieve this feat.

Double-sided labels are a significant technological advance in the industry, with Reflex Labels devising a repeatable, cost effective method for producing double-sided labels at high-volume. The method for achieving this remains guarded, but was achieved on a narrow web Mark Andy press, running at 65m/min.

Innovation was around a collaboration with Rollspack’s ink supplier DIC, to develop a high-performance water-based system that is equal to the quality of solvent inks. The ink system developed is solvent tolerated and can be used side-by-side with solvent inks, without special wash-up procedure.

Rollspack engineered a versatile prepress profile compatible with both ink types, and the job was printed using thermal plates, eliminating solvents and VOCs. The water-based inks were printed at 150 lpi at a speed of 300m/min, with no machine modifications required.

The print business was approached by greens and herbs producer McCormack Family Farms, which was looking for a water-resistant, eco-friendly alternative to its imported wax-lined produce trays. It had seen a video on water-resistant coatings by Smurfit Kappa Markham Vale on LinkedIn.

Smurfit Kappa had to engineer a resilient corrugated cardboard tray, capable of withstanding moisture to preserve the produce, and achieved this through a ‘pioneering’ post-printed waterproof coating which is also biodegradable and recyclable. As well as their practical functionality, the water-proof trays, sourced locally, have made a substantial contribution to environmental performance, reducing transport costs and carbon footprint.
